The Ashanti (Asante) region of southern Ghana is a remnant of the Ashanti Empire, which was founded in 1670. The Ashanti live in the Ashanti Region, specifically in the capital of Kumasi, and, due to the Atlantic slave trade, a known diaspora of Ashanti exists in the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica.
The art of Ashanti can be classified into two main groups: metalwork and woodcarvings. Fertility and children are the most frequent themes in the sculptures of the Asante.
